Littleton :: essays research papers

It seems for the past week or so, the entire world (yes, world, when I was in Spain they showed news coverage of this 24/7 too) has been shaken up by the crop shootings in Littleton, CO (I think thats the name of the town, though dont hold me to that). What amazes me about this story is not the fact that two people went into a school and shot a bunch of people (apparently this is the seventh in-school multiple homicide in teh past 18 months), its the fact that the media has given extensive coverage this, and has exploited it for wholly its worth. I suppose with the impeachment trial over and done with, and the only thing remaining of that issue is a few jokes, the media needs something new to pounce on and make a dollar off of. And they have done just that. Everywhere I turn someone is talking about how terrible this cataclysm is. Dont get me wrong, I think the senseless killing of people, which is pretty much what happened in this case, is wrong. The two boys who did this probab ly wanted to kill themselves, and figured theyd make as big of an exit as possible, and in doing that, they have succeeded. Thats not the thing that really bothers me though, its the fact that a nation like America (and other nations too, approximately of my knowledge of what happened came from a British paper) can exploit something like this, and the masses can swallow it up. But I suppose it makes good news. Who is the sicker person in this case? The nazi boy who goes into a school, kills about ten people or so, or the average American who buys the newspaper with the headline of "NEO Nazi MASSACRES INNOCENT TEENS IN SCHOOL"? The boys who did this knew very well that if they were to pull off something like this, they would have the entire country (and others) all wrapped up in it. If they seriously wanted to kill people, and nothing else, they would have just blown up the entire school with everyone in it. But they didnt, and they have gotten everyone all caught up in the story. Ive seen it described as "one of the worst tragedies in history". The people that make those statements have swallowed this lie hook, line, and sinker.

Another important one is patient confidentiality and maintaining that confidentiality throughout treatment. If a patient does not trust you they are unlikely to get the most out of the therapy strategy you are pursui ng. Will My Child be Okay at a Summer Camp? :: Disabilities Education Essays

Will My Child be Okay at a summer camping area?With the thought of summer camp comes the recollection of cabins filled overstuffed with bunk beds, campfires, and mess hall meals with the loads of friends we met at the opening dance. Summer camp is a childhood memory for many of us, one that changed our youth, usually for the better. Such camp memories and activities still hold true today, even for children with disabilities. The inclusive classroom that takes place during the school year has now begun to carry over into the summer months at camps across the country, whether they be overnight for the whole summer, day camps or pass camps. Residential camps may be one setting where children can develop greater personal and social maturity, according the Ann Fullerton, et al. article entitled The Impact of Camp Programs on Children with Disabilities Opportunities for Independence. With that thought in mind the Americans for Disabilities Act now requires all camps to make reasona ble accommodations so that children with special needs can attend to. But most camps surpass this requirement by a long shot. Inclusion has become quite a popular aspect of the general education schooling and so children with disabilities, learning, behavioral or physical among some, are now being placed in classrooms with their peers with no such needs. These children are given the chance to interact and take in things they would watch never done at home perhaps or in a special education school. The same goes for summer camps these children may attend between June and August. As stated in a Washington Post article, parents of special education students have long said their children are left in the lurch once school closes for the summer. Summer camps across the country are beginning to bring together children with and without disabilities for memorable summer experiences. The percentage of accredited camps that have tailored service for children with physical or mental disabilities has risen from 9 percent to 13 in the past two years, states Harriet Gamble, director of communication theory for the American Camping Association. Having accredited camps that blend children with and without disabilities provides an opportunity for new friendships to form and families to attend camp together. At Kamp A-Kom-Plish in Southern Maryland is where Tiffani Sterling-Davis sent her iii children. Alayna and Julian checked into camp with sister Breanna, 11, who has Down syndrome.

Free Essay - Roller Coaster of Emotions in Kate Chopins Story of an Hour :: Story Hour essays

A Roller Coaster of Emotions in A Story of An Hour In the short story A Story of An Hour by Kate Chopin, the whole rangeof emotions are felt by the main charter Louise Mallard. Upon learning of herhusbands death she is immediately overcome by sadness. However, once she isalone she allows herself to meet her feelings of joy at the prospect ofbeing free from repression. She is no more able to staff off the feeling thatwas approaching her than trying to stop the waves from hitting the shore.Basically stated we are military groupless over our feelings. First, one can state that no matter how hard we try we can not nurse afeeling from coming over us. Louises feelings come from deep within her soul.Physical exhaustion followed her first storm of grief. At first she did not spot what was coming to her. She could not even give it a name. When shestarted to recognize it, she was trying to beat it back with sheer will power.Only to find that will power is no match for the total encompassin g of feelings.Once she had abandoned herself the word free had escaped from her lips. Shedid not deliberately want it but it had come anyway. Unmistakably, a joy overtook her. Not that she would not be sad again, but for now she was like a birdlet out of the cage. Mrs. Mallard was a good example of Shakespeares line To Thine own selfbe true. She did not allow guilt to rear its ugly head but instead moreover felther feelings. She allowed no one to witness her self assertion. But, it wasthe strongest impulse of her being. As she was projecting spring and summer days to come, a feeling that herlife would be her own again gave her a contentment that she had not felt in along time. No one actually knew what Mrs. Mallard had experienced coffin nail herclosed door. Although, the human heart was meant to deal with that much pain,joy and disappointment in one day never mind one hour. To her sister(Josephine) it would push through that she died of joy when she saw her spouse was notdead. T he truth was buried with Louise. Tragically, what seemed to be great

Oligopoly versus monopoly competition Essay

Differences Between Oligopoly and Monopolistic Competition Market Structures Market structure refers to the interconnected characteristics of a commercialise, which include the number of firms, level and forms of rivalry and extent of product differentiation (Business Dictionary, 2012). Based on these parameters, several securities industry structures be defined and this essay entrust focus on two of them, namely monopolistic rivalry and oligopolistic markets, by discussing the differences among them and their impact on the customers.Oligopolistic market is defined as a market that is prevail by few larger-than-life firms, and that these firms are mutu completelyy dependent, where they grant to monitor the actions of other competitors closely and act accordingly in response to that (Ison and Wall, 2007). These firms target big markets, at regional, national and even international level. Examples of oligopolistic markets include airline, petroleum and bank industries (Econom ics Online, 2012). On the other progress, monopolistic competition market refers to a market with large number of firms, each producing slightly different product, i.e. their products are uncommon in its own right and hence the firms have a certain degree of monopoly force-out (Ison and Wall, 2007). In general, these firms target a smaller market size, say at a local or regional level (Economics Online, 2012). For example, restaurants, hair saloons and boutiques are all examples under this market structure. Firms in oligopoly market have a certain degree of control over the terms of their products (Ison and Wall, 2007). However, there is interdependence in bell making between the firms.For non-collusive oligopoly, any bell making decision will have to take into account the likely reaction of the other firms to ensure market share (Economics Online, 2012). Hence, there is a potential for price war, where the firms try to beat each other by lowering the price, without any increa se in crave for their products, as illustrated by the Kinked Demand Curve ( get into 1 Economics Help, 2012). Such circumstance is undesirable as their profits might be diminished and the consumers will be the only beneficiaries.In contrast, in the end of collusive oligopoly, the firms collude among themselves by agreeing on a price of products to avoid price war. Owing to the substantive market share they own, they can set the price high to gain paranormal profit (Geoff Riley, 2006). Figure 1. Kinked demand curve (Economics Help, 2012). In monopolistic competition, the firms have only little control over the price (Ison and Wall, 2007). This is because the extensive differentiation of products means the firms face constant competition from others, and may easily be replaced if their price is deemed unreasonable, despite certain unique features of their products.Oligopoly and monopolistic competition market structures also differ in term of profit making. Firms in oligopolistic can make supernormal profit all the time and there are several reasons to this (Ison and Wall, 2007 Amos Web, 2012). Firstly, they own significant market share in a huge market, therefore the gross revenue volume is high. Secondly, average cost of production is low as they produce in bulk. Thirdly, as discussed before, they have the ability to set price, especially in the case of collusive oligopoly (Amos Web, 2012).For instance, Tesco is a chain supermarket that is found everywhere in the UK (hence huge market size) and as they purchase their products from suppliers in bulk, the cost is kept at minimum, thereby maximising their profits (Mearday, 2009). In contrast, for monopolistic competition, profit making is not for sure. However, theoretically speaking, there are two stages to the profit making by firms in monopolistic competition (Ison and Wall, 2012 gameed, 2001). In short run, the firms can set the price high to obtain supernormal profit (represented by shaded region in Fig ure 2A).As the abnormal profit they make in short run attracts many potential rivals, the firms must then set the price low to extend competitive in long run (Figure 2B). For example, in Canada, the price of personal computers was very expensive when they were first introduced into the market, but as the number of computer manufacturers increased, the price of personal computers has been declining over the past decade (Figure 3 Statistics Canada, 2011). B B A A Cost Cost Price Price Figure 2. (A) proceeds maximisation in short run in monopolistic competition.(B) Normal profit making in long run in monopolistic competition (Bized, 2001). Figure 3. Change of computer price by different purchasers. (Statistics Canada, 2011). Mode of competition is also different between the firms in oligopoly and monopolistic competition. Oligopoly is characterized by frail competition, mainly repayable to high barriers for entry to market (Economics Online, 2012). This is due to various reasons in cluding exclusive resources ownership, extensive relevant knowledge, patent and copyright, other government re unforgivingions, managerial take exception and high start-up cost.(Economics Online, 2012 Amos Web, 2012). Airline industry is a typical example of that, as setting up an airline companies requires huge financial resource and compliance to strict rules and regulations imposed by the authority (Amos Web, 2012). For example, in Malaysia, the second airline, AirAsia was only established in 2001 (AirAsia, 2012), 46 years after the establishment of Malaysia Airline in 1947 (Malaysia Airline, 2012). In contrast, there is near perfect competition in monopolistic competition market, as there is freedom to enter or exit the market due to low entry barrier (Economic Online, 2012 Amos Web, 2012).As opposed to oligopolistic market, the start up cost for firms in monopolistic competition market is much lower, as the market size they target is smaller (Ison and Wall, 2007 Economic Onlin e, 2012). Also, as discussed before, product differentiation in this market means each firm has a somewhat unique product, fulfilling the demand of a certain group of consumers in the market. Moreover, there is less restriction from the government and starting firm does not require exclusive knowledge.For example, genius can easily open a restaurant, as long as he or she has a unique menu to offer. In conclusion, oligopoly and monopolistic competition represents two distinct market structures. From consumers point of view, monopolistic competition is more preferable. Through monopolistic competition among the firms, consumers enjoy to choose from a wider range of products, which are available at more competitive prices. This is because the firms always try to enhance their products with better innovation and keep their prices down to attract customers.Oligopoly on the other hand is less desirable for consumers as products can often be overly-priced since the firms have a greater co ntrol over price.References 1. Poem Comparison: ‘Island Man’, ‘Two Scavengers…’ Essay

Compare Island cosmos with one other poem, to pose how the poets intent people to explain the conflict that scum bag exist between and within different cultures.People are at the centre all communities. They embody the values, customers and ideas that item culture possesses. By examining how people behave and think, it is possible to gain a greater understanding of how their cultural roots affect them. Island Man describes how an immigrant in capital of the United Kingdom reacts to his environment as he dreams of his Caribbean home. In contrast, the people in Two Scavengers all live in San Francisco, but lead totally different lives there.Island Man uses structure to show the conflicting and confused waking thoughts of the man. There is no punctuation, the line lengths vary and some phrases are totally misplaced, as is the individual he eternally comes back groggily groggily. Like Island Man, Two Scavengers also has no punctuation. It represents an instant in time, like the fla sh of a camera. The conflicting images seem to be laid one on top of the other, line by line, emphasising the contrasts between the both lifestyles.The language in Island Man shows the inner turmoil that the character is tone ending through. The reader gets a series of contrasting images. For example, the sound of the blue surf of the Caribbean conflicts with, the grey metallic soar of London. The pillow waves show the troubled sleep he has had which has caused the ruffles, but also tells of the dreams he has had of his emerald island. The word wombing suggests the sense of security his homeland offers him, in contrast to the faceless dull North Circular roar of London. secernate is also used in Two Scavengers, but here it is the contrast of the different types of people the woman is casually coifed, the older man is grungy. Although the teenage mens hair and glasses are similar, their appearances are mostly very different the hip three-piece linen suit conflicts with the red m alleable blazers.The use of vocabulary is effective in both poems. Some words, such as soar, roar and surge have double meanings they are lordly when they relate to his island, but have negative meanings in London. In Two Scavengers, descriptive words are used to highlight the differences between the people. For example, scavengers are loathsome compared to an elegant couple. The poet uses this contrast to make a direct criticism of society and how it creates this division between rich and poor people. Phrases like small disjunction emphasise how these people may only be a few metres apart on the street, but, in terms of their lifestyles, they give never meet.Both poets show how the people feel in their different situations and give us their own view. Island Man obviously has fond memories of the Caribbean but resents his dull lifestyle in London. We can feel his depression as he heaves himself to Another London day. Grace Nichols has sympathy for this man as he feels the confli ct of these two cultures. The feelings revealed in Two Scavengers are very one-sided, as we have the envy of the poor, as if they were watching some odorless TV ad / in which everything is always possible, contrasting with the uncaring attitudes of the rich, who dont even seem to notice the truck or its passengers. The poets attitude here is one of despair at this unequal society.Island Man has made me more aware how it might feel to be trapped in a foreign country, while Two Scavengers starkly highlights the divisions in American society. The poems have made me hope that in the future, society will be more equal and that governments who promise equal opportunities for all will deliver on what they say.

Analysis of the Sam Shepard’s Play Buried Child Essay

In my paper I am going to analyze adept of the Sam Shepards stand for. Its name sounds depressive simply it completely fulfils the main idea of the influence Buried Child. From the information I read about the author I deduced that he wrote it on the basis of his witness per word of honoral experience in his childhood. Sam Shepard grew up on the farm in California and was a member of a broken family because his father was an alcoholic. The play was firstly produced in the year 1978. From this and from the story itself implies my presumption that the whole story is set in the 1970s when the USA was in a hard economic situation caused by the war in Vietnam. To be more concrete it is set in Illinois on the farm where nothing grow anymore. I count on that only through the description of the acknowledgments you would be able to see the main points of why I titled my work American Nightmare. Dodge is supposed to be the head of the family but he is broken by things that happened in the past.He is an old dying man and he is paranoiac but he has a rea password to be. He is considered poor man whom doesnt like even his family. He failed in building his American Dream because his family is no more on the job(p) and the farm he built up many years ago is left without any interest. He left everything after the biggest secret of the family happened. He killed his wifes son but not without reason, as his son Tilden in the play says, He said he had his reasons . . . Hes the only one who knows where its buried. (Shepard 104) The reasons I found out in the text were that she, Halie, had the baby with another man. There are some hints which led me to think that the man cogency have been Tilden, her own son. Then it would have been much worse because the act of incest is tot every(prenominal)y against the modern society.We dont know the sanctionground, how everything happened, if Halie was raped by her son or he was seduced by his mother. Nevertheless killing the baby was no solution because the family fell apart anyway. Halie, the only women in the family, is the one who tries to have a normal life but it is full of hypocrisy and fear of that other will find out the family secret. Interesting is that even though Dodge killed her son she lives and communicates with him like nothing happened. Even though it is obvious that she is having an affair with a Protestant minister Father Dewis. This is also an irony because he should be a symbol of temperate life. Instead of that he drinks alcohol and seduces women. In the play I feel that the fearof not creation relieved have everyone in the family. They made a deal that they wont talk about the past and they are hoping that they will simply forget. Halies only light in the life was her son Ansel who was murdered in a motel room after marrying a Catolic Italian girl. Halie hated that girl from the beginning and she argued that she was a Devil affirm (Shepard 74).Ansel had no time to go bad so he fash ions like an ideal son in Halies eyes. She is so obsessed with him that she wants to unveil his statue. She remembers him as a son who played basketball and was a soldier, a hero, an All-American. In her monologues then we can find the importance of doing some sport in youth and being a Protestant. The character of Tilden is very interesting and mysterious for me. He is the oldest son and he was supposed to take care of the family, the parents, which is matter of fact in the American Dream (children should take care of their parents). Nevertheless he got into trouble somewhere in New Mexico, maybe he was kept in prison, because he returned back to his parents kin after 20 years completely broken, especially mentally.His liberty had to be taken away from him because in one of his monologues about driving he described how it was like to have a car, which is also one of the symbols of American indep closureence I drove all day long sometimes. Across the leave . . . I drove past towns . Anywhere. Past palm trees. Lightning. Anything I would drive through it. I would drive through it and I would stop and I would look around and I would drive on . . . There was nothing I loved more.Nothing I dreamed of was better than driving. (Shepard 102) Freedom is defined in American Ways as the desire and the right of all individuals to control their own destiny without outside interference from the government (Datesman, Crandall, Kearny 33) and exactly this was in Tildens life broken. He was in prison and he is under the control of his parents now. Also his brother Bradley is not independent due to the accident where he woolly his leg. With the character of Bradley I connected one question Why he could live and the other baby not? Because from the story it is obvious that Bradley also isnt Dodges son. The only solution I have is that the murdered baby really had to be a birth from incest.The only light in the story, at least(prenominal) at the beginning, is Shelly. She came to visit his boyfriends grandparents house and she had the typical American,that means ideal, image of how it would be like I thought it was going to be turkey dinners and apple pie and all that kinda stuff. (Shepard 91) Obviously she was confused from all these people in the house and she was the one who forced them to talk about things. Nevertheless it was to much for her and she left the house and her boyfriend Vince. To be honest there were some symbols in the play I didnt understand. For example the act of symbolic Dodges burying on the end of the two acts. The only thing that came up my mind was that his sons blame him from everything and they think that killing the baby was the main reason why the family fall apart.In my ruling thats not true because each member of that family has his own guilt. Another mystery for me is the character of Vince, Tildens son. I didnt get the message of his character especially at the end of the play where, after Dodge is dead, he puts on Dodg es cap and lay down on the couch, totally out of his mind. perhaps he was so shocked and ashamed of the family secret that he just adopted to the fact and started to live the same life as his grandfather lived. The play perfectly describes the opposite of the American Dream which is the life goal of most Americans and it also shows what a big difference is between idealism and reality. (Datesman, Crandall, Kearny 34)

Corporate Strategy Analysis Essay

The four basic alternatives when using corporate schema in the planning function of management are concentration, vertical integration, homocentric diversification, and, conglomerate diversification. After viewing the termination chief executive officer videos regarding Coco-Cola, Southwest Airlines, VF Corporation, and, reproduce, I can easily identify the strategy used by each CEO. Coca-Cola CEO Neville Isdell retired from Coca-Cola in 2001 after serving 35 years with the caller-out. When Mr. Isedell left Coca-Cola sales began to drop, there was high turnover, and low morale threatened the companys prospective. Mr. Isdell recognise the need for a new strategy and change, after seeing what other competitors were doing. He seen that Pepsi had diversified their options and Coca-Cola needed to do the equivalent. I believe vertical integration strategy was used here. Coca-Cola bought the product vitamin water, in order to dive into the non-carbonated beverage sector market and e xpand within the industry. Coca Cola is trying to laterality the global market through aggressive strategy and branding campaigns, with its carbonated and non-carbonated beverages.Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly has managed to keep the company afloat as unmatched of the nigh profitable airlines in the country. Mr. Kelly always travels at the back of the aircraft, talking to customers and taking notes of their expectations and complaints. I believe that Mr. Kelly used the concentration strategy to concentrate on only on the airline industry to sustain the companys profitability. In order to maintain profits, CEO Gary Kellys strategy was to keep cost low, fly the same 737 aircrafts so that parts and maintenance stay easy, and treat all customers like kings and queens including employees. Business week (2014) However, Southwest Airlines must expand in the future to remain a profitable company. VF Corporation is the largest apparel maker in the world. They are the biggest seller o f jeans, such aswrangler and, lee brands. VF CEO Mackey McDonalds focus on planning and preparation for the unexpected and customer connection. Mr. McDonalds biggest challenges was the restructuring of the company in 2001, cutting 13,000 jobs, and moving manufacturing jobs overseas to countries as China and India due to cheap labor.The company model was the taste for branding the lifestyle behind the brand they believe that investing in strong consumer recognition is better than high-fashion brands. VF Corporation continues to expand their brands with the new-fangled acquisition of the Eagle Creek travel bag Company, and Majestic Athletic Company, which sells baseball gear. I think that the CEO used vertical integration strategy to expand their line of products and, distribution channels. Anne Mulcathy became the first female CEO of Xerox.
